- I. Registration
-
- You are encouraged to give this software a test drive, and if you find
- it interesting or useful, to please register your copy with the author.
- By registering your copy, you indicate to the author interest in the
- program's development, providing incentive for him to distribute better
- versions of Speed Reader in the future.
-
- If you were to use an unregistered copy of Speed Reader for more than a
- few times, you would be taking advantage of the author's trust in you.
- In addition, you would be hindering scientific research and the
- development of better versions of the program, consequently causing
- others to lose benefits from these things.
-
- So please help the author with his work on the next version of Speed
- Reader and allow yourself to sleep easier at night by registering your
- copy with him. To do this, mail a check for $4.00 made out to "Michael
- Herron" to the address below, along with your street address. You will
- receive a letter, signed by the author, stating that you own a
- registered copy of Speed Reader. You will also receive free registered
- copies of all consecutive versions of Speed Reader when they are made
- available.
-
- Thank you.

- II. Background
-
- Research by John Hopkins University indicates that people are able to
- read at six to eight times their normal speed when the words are
- presented to them one at a time, always in the same location. They
- termed this process R.S.V.P. (Rapid Serial Visual Presentation).
-
- John Hopkins found that, on average, people read approximately 200 to
- 400 words per minute from a page of text. Utilizing RSVP, people can
- read sophisticated text with excellent recall at about 800 words per
- minute, and with approximately 80% recall at speeds near 1600 words
- per minute.
-
- RSVP reduces stress on the eyes by eliminating the need for the
- reader's eyes to continuously scan the text. In other words, the text
- moves for the reader.
-
- This software was developed for people in need of a method to read
- information at high speeds. Speed Reader can read any text file in the
- standard ASCII format. It displays one word at a time, each for a
- fraction of a second in the same place. Speed Reader provides the
- reader with seven reading speeds ranging from 200 to 1400 words per
- minute. It also supports hot keys that pause the reading allowing the
- user to rest, and then resume reading when he is ready. A pop-up menu
- gives the user added control during reading, enabling him to change
- speeds or place a bookmark to start from in a future reading session.
-
-
- III. Formatting documents for reading
-
- Speed Reader requires the text file to be in the standard ASCII format,
- supported by most word processors. If a document was typed in a word
- processor, in order for Speed Reader to read it accurately it must be
- saved as an ASCII (DOS text) file. The same applies to scanned
- documents (see suggestion section for recommendations for scanned
- documents).
-
- WordPerfect 5.0 for DOS users: After saving your document, exit
- WordPerfect and run the WordPerfect Conversion program. Select
- "Change from WordPerfect format" (not "Change to WordPerfect format")
- and enter the filename of the document you want converted. Then enter
- a new name for the file once it has been converted to ASCII format.
- NOTE: Unless you want the ASCII formatted file to be copied over the
- original file, change the filename.
-
- WordPerfect 5.x for Windows and Microsoft Word for Windows: Select
- "Save As" from the File menu and use your mouse to scroll through the
- "File Format" window and to select "ASCII (DOS text)." NOTE: Unless
- you want the ASCII formatted file to be copied over the original file,
- change the filename.
-
-
- IV. Using the software
-
- Once you have your file in ASCII format on a disk, you can start Speed
- Reader and begin reading. To do this, change to the directory
- containing the "speed.exe" file (or insert your program diskette into
- the drive) and type "speed" at the prompt.
-
-
- After viewing the opening screen, press the spacebar. Type in the path
- and filename of the ASCII file you want to read, and press ENTER. The
- program is then loaded into memory. (If the filename was typed
- incorrectly, or a disk read error occurs, Speed Reader terminates and
- you are returned to the DOS prompt.)
-
- After checking to see if the program was loaded correctly, Speed Reader
- asks you to press the spacebar. Once you do this, the text file is
- scanned for bookmarks that may have been placed in the file by Speed
- Reader during a previous reading session. If the file has no bookmarks,
- Speed Reader reports: "None found." If it finds a bookmark, it will
- give you the option to begin reading from that point, or to start
- reading from the beginning of the file.
-
- Speed Reader now prompts you for a speed selection. Most people
- read about 200 words per minute on a page, and find 600 words per
- minute to be the most comfortable speed in Speed Reader. However,
- some prefer to skim the document at higher speeds. After some use you
- will find the speed that suits you best. To select the speed, type in
- the highlighted (light blue) portion of the number and press ENTER.
-
- The next screen is where the reading is done. Speed Reader provides
- you with a few seconds to ready yourself for reading. The words will
- appear in the small window at the center of your screen, where the
- numbers are counting down. You should focus your eyes on these
- numbers to get ready for the first words of the document.
-
- If you selected a speed that is too fast or too slow for your
- preference, just hit any key on your keyboard. Speed Reader will pause
- to give your eyes a break and a pop-up menu appears above the reading
- window. Buy pressing "c," you can adjust the speed at which to read,
- and you will be returned to the reading screen with the pop-up menu
- still in sight. To continue reading the document from where you left
- off, press "r."
-
- If you want to stop reading and return to the document later, press any
- key to pause reading and the pop-up menu will appear. Select "p" from
- the menu to place a bookmark and close the file. "End of file" is
- displayed in the reading window, and you are prompted to press either
- the spacebar to read another file, or the "x" key to exit to DOS.
-
- The next time you read the same file, Speed Reader will scan for
- bookmarks and ask you if you want to begin reading from there. If you
- say no, you will begin from the top of the file again. (NOTE: If you
- plan to place bookmarks, you should first make another copy of the file.
- Speed Reader must alter the file slightly in order to place the
- bookmark. It is possible, however, to remove these bookmarks from a
- file that has them. Just load the file into a text editor of any kind
- and search for the bookmark symbol and replace it with the letter that
- belongs in its place.)
-
- If you want to stop reading and not place a bookmark in the file, select
- "s" from the pop-up menu to skip to the end of the file. "End of file"
-
- is displayed in the reading window, and you are prompted to press either
- the spacebar to read another file, or the "x" key to exit to DOS.
-
-
-
-
- V. Suggestions
-
- If the ASCII file contains many symbols other than letters and numbers,
- it is a good idea to use a text editor to delete them. Also, it will
- save some time in the reading window if centered text is moved over to
- the left margin before reading in Speed Reader.
-
- Scanned documents that contain graphics may produce some symbols
- other than letters and numbers when the file is converted to ASCII
- format. Again, it is a good idea to delete these symbols in a text
- editor before using Speed Reader to read the file.
-
- Using a scanner to scan the pages of textbooks and reports onto a
- diskette and then reading the text in Speed Reader will save you
- valuable time. Even if the original textbook or report contained
- illustrations and charts, Speed Reader is very useful. Not only does it
- allow you assimilate the information you read, but when a figure or
- diagram is referred to in the reading window you can pause to glance at
- the picture in the original document with the touch of a key. After
- familiarizing yourself with the chart, you can resume reading in Speed
- Reader.
-

- versions of Speed Reader, please send email to the author at:
